Don't Leave Home Without Your Bike Pumps!

Considered by many riders to be an accessory, the lowly air pump is far from something that is just extra weight to carry. Being able to repair a leak (or at least air a tire to a point sufficient for riding) is critical for riders who wish to get home from that remote riding haven. Bike Pumps come in different types and price ranges, so all riders should be able to match their purchases to individual situations and needs.

For use at home, a good quality floor pump is an excellent investment, but floor pumps are not a practical solution for use while on the road. Options for road use include various mini-pumps or frame mounted pumps. Another option would be an inflator that utilizes CO2 cartridges. Each option has advantages and disadvantages, and consider your own needs before you decide which option to select. Bike Pumps can be matched to the needs of the rider, the type of bicycle ridden, and the terrain.

Better floor pumps are metal and should have a gauge. In addition, if your tubes use presta valves, the pump must be able to meet that need. The price of floor pumps will range from less than $20 to $65 or more. Portable pumps are available in a great variety of styles that can be attached to the bicycle or easily carried. All-plastic pumps are not really recommended - look for a pump that has a metal head. Good quality mini and frame pumps can be purchased for less than $50. The last common pumps utilize CO2 to inflate the tires. CO2 pumps are quite light in weight, but are subject to some problems. The CO2 cartridges are subject to leakage over time, and you probably should carry at least two or three at a minimum. Again, you can purchase good quality CO2 pumps for under $50. Bike Pumps all require care over time to ensure proper operation.

Safety while riding is always important. Bike Pumps are a form of insurance against problems that could result in a threat to your health and safety. This is especially true with riders who do not stick to well traveled roads. Consider your personal safety when engaging in any sport that has the potential to cause injury or leave you in a position where your safety is compromised.
